The temptation of the Redeemer.

Rio sunset: caught
Rio sunrise: also
Next up: Christ the Redeemer!…

With the sun up, we headed on over to the one and only Christ the Redeemer statue! But of course we did! This imposing masterpiece of both engineering and art is simply mandatory for any visitor to Rio de Janeiro!…

…So, of course, “any visitor to Rio de Janeiro” means, alas, crowds of tourists – and right from dawn ->

The views from up top – oh my gorgeous!

But first, all visitors get dropped off round the back of the statue ->

From there you either climb the steps up on foot, which takes around five minutes, or stand in line for ages to take the elevator. You can guess which option I went for.

Btw, here’s the lighting that illuminates the statue at night. Why those multicolored things are on during the day I couldn’t work out…

Oh my oh my oh my ->

But let’s get back to the main attraction. What can I say? It’s simply a world-class masterpiece. Everyone knows it, and I agree 200% ->

One last look from the back:

We hop onto the train that shuttles tourists up and down these mountains.

Since the gradients here are pretty steep, the train doesn’t just run on rails: there are special hooks down the middle between the rails; that’s how its manages to climb up and down. Like this ->

Around 20 minutes later we were at the bottom:

The views on the way down also are also impressive – both to the left and the right:

And that was about it for our Rio-tourisms: not bad for the limited free time we had; however, the elephant not in the room? Copacabana beach: we didn’t get a chance to walk along it (we simply ran out of time). We had to make do with checking it out reasonably up-close from our hotel:

But no worries, for, as I always say – that’s all the more reason to get back soon to see the bits we missed!…

The best, hi-res photos from Brazil are here.
